How to Care for Eczema Prone Skin During the Winter Months

When winter arrives, it brings cosy jumpers, hot drinks, and, unfortunately for many, uncomfortable eczema flare-ups. Cold air, harsh winds, and indoor heating can all take a toll on sensitive skin, leaving it dry, itchy, and irritated.

At E&G Skin Clinic, we see a noticeable rise in clients struggling with eczema symptoms as soon as the weather turns colder. Understanding why this happens and how to manage it can make a big difference to your comfort and confidence throughout this season.

Why Eczema Tends to Worsen in Winter?

Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis)is caused by a weakened skin barrier that allows moisture to escape and irritants to enter. During the winter, several factors can aggravate this imbalance:

  • Dry air: Cold air outside and central heating indoors both lower humidity, leaving skin parched.
  • Hot showers and baths: They might feel lovely after a cold day, but they strip away natural oils.
  • Wool and heavy fabrics: These can rub against the skin and trigger irritation.
  • Sudden temperature changes: Moving between the cold outdoors and warm indoors stresses the skin,

The result? Tightness, redness, itching, and sometimes painful cracking; all hallmarks of an eczema flare-up.

Simple Steps to Keep Eczema Under Control.

  1. Moisturise like it’s your job. In winter, moisturising isn’t optimal; it’s essential. Apply a thick, fragrance-free emollient several times a day, especially after walking. Creams and balms containing ceramides, shea butter, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid help trap moisture and rebuild the skin barrier.
  2. Choose Gentle Cleaners. Avoid foaming washes and heavily perfumed products. Instead, go for a mild, soap-free cleanser that won’t strip your skin. Your skin should feel soft and comfortable after washing, not tight or squeaky clean.
  3. Be Smart with heat. Keep showers warm, not hot, and limit them to around 10 minutes. When indoors, resist the urge to turn up the heating too high. Using a humidifier can also help add moisture back into dry air.
  4. Wear the Right Fabrics. Opt for soft, breakable fabrics like cotton or bamboo. If you love wool, wear a cotton layer underneath to protect your skin from direct contact,
  5. Cal Flare-Ups Quickly: When itching or redness begins, apply your moisturiser straight away and use any prescribed creams as directed. The earlier you treat a flare-up, the easier it is to control.
