Why Does Rosacea Get Worse in Summer?
And Why DIY Fixes Often Make It Worse
If your rosacea seems to have a mind of its own the moment the sun comes out, you are not imagining it. Summer is for many of our clients the hardest season to manage. The heat climbs; the redness climbs with it. The skincare routine that worked perfectly well in the winter suddenly feels like it’s fighting against you.
At E&G Skin Clinic in Morningside, Edinburgh, we see this pattern every year without fail. And every year, we also see well- meaning attempts at home treatment that end up making things worse rather than better. So let’s talk about what’s actually happening to your skin in the warmer months, and why the safest route back to calm skin usually isn’t the one you will find on your bathroom shelf.
Why Summer is Rosacea’s Favourite Season
Rosacea is, at its core, a condition of the blood vessels and the skin’s inflammatory response. It doesn’t take much to set it off; unfortunately, summer brings together almost every trigger at once.
Heat and UV exposure. Sunlight is one of the most consistently reported rosacea triggers there is. UV rays cause the blood vessels near the surface of the skin to dilate, which is exactly the mechanism behind that telltale flushing and visible redness. The longer and more intense the sun exposure, the more provoked those vessels become.
Sweat and Humidity.
Sweating raises skin temperature and can irritate an already sensitised barrier. For rosacea- prone skin, that combination of heat and moisture on the surface is often enough to rip things from “manageable into flushed and stinging”
Air conditioning and temperature swings. Moving between a hot street and a cold air- conditioned office or car might feel refreshing, but rapid temperature changes are a classic rosacea trigger. Your blood vessels are essentially being asked to expand and contract in quick succession, and they do not appreciate it.
Alcohol based fragranced products.
Many people reach for lighter, gel-based moisturisers and sprays in summer to avoid feeling greasy. Unfortunately, a lot of these products contain alcohol, menthol or fragrance to create that cooling sensation all of which are known irritants for compromised skin barriers.
Chlorine and pool water,
If you are in and out of the pool this summer, chlorine can strip away the skins natural lipid barrier, leaving it more reactive and more vulnerable ro everything else on the list.
Why does trying a few things at home not work?
We understand the urge to just try things that worked before, so you start trying the old methods, mixing products to desperately find something to soothe your red uncomfortable, hot skin. The rosacea prone skin has a compromised skin barrier and that barrier does not respond well to being experimented on.
WHY PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT IS NEEDED AT THIS POINT.
We are not guessing at what might help. We start with a proper assessment of your skin, your specific rosacea subtype, and the particular triggers affecting you this season, because rosacea in one person can look and behave differently than in another.
Treatments include medical-grade skincare formulated specifically to calm inflammation and rebuild the barrier. In-clinic treatments give you speedy results. We monitor how your skin responds and adjust course. Rosacea management isn’t a one- off fix; its an ongoing relationship with your skin, and having us who understand its patterns makes a great difference to how well it’s controlled long term, even when seasons change.
